Pregnancy Discrimination
Your employer cannot discriminate against you due to pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions. Sometimes employers use a number of different tactics to discriminate against these employees because of their negative opinion that they are less productive. However, you have rights and they are protected by the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978 as well as certain state and local laws. Your employer may not treat you differently because:
- You may become pregnant;
- You are pregnant; or
- You take a pregnancy-related leave of absence.
Some, but not all, forms of pregnancy discrimination include:
- Termination
- Reduced pay
- Demotions
- Denied promotions
- Lost benefits
- Involuntary transfers
